Wines & beer

An esoteric list rather than an obvious one, many choices by the glass, and a range of domestic and imported beer.

Kool Beanz — wines & beer

Our wine list is an effort to offer the more esoteric selections, featuring many choices by the glass or by the bottle.

You may enjoy a selection from our wines to complement the flavor of your favorite dish or ask one of our knowledgeable staff for the best complement to your food selection.

We have red wines, white wines and a wide selection of domestic and imported beer.

Why there is no printed list on this page

For the same reason there is no printed food menu: it changes. The list has traditionally been written on a label wrapped around an empty wine bottle, with the beer list done the same way on an empty beer bottle, and brought to your table. It is a small piece of theatre that also happens to be the most practical way to run a list that moves.

What stays constant is the intent. Given the choice between the bottle everyone stocks and the one that will surprise you next to a plate of jerked scallops, we take the second. Guests have described the list as inclusive and unusual, with a good number of things by the glass so you are not committed to a whole bottle to try something new.

Drinking with this food

A menu that swings from harissa to hollandaise to gochujang in one sitting is genuinely hard to pair from a printed card, which is another argument for asking. A few rough principles the floor tends to work from:

  • Anything jerked, blackened or chile-rubbed wants something off-dry or aromatic rather than tannic.
  • The cream-sauce pastas — the crawfish and tasso linguini especially — take a fuller white happily.
  • Seared tuna and the miso-and-gochujang end of the menu often go better with a chilled light red than with a white.
  • The flank steak and the duck are where the reds on the list earn their place.
  • Beer is a completely respectable answer to fried oysters, fish and chips, or eggplant fries, and nobody here will think less of you.

Sunday brunch

When brunch is running, bubbles are served by the glass and by the carafe, with mimosa and pomegranate versions in both the house sparkling and the prosecco. See the brunch menu.

Wine tastings in The Room

Our private dining room is used regularly for wine tastings and wine dinners, with menus built around the bottles. Call (850) 999-1372 to talk it through. More on private events.

Wine & beer questions

What sort of wine list is it?

A deliberately odd one. The house policy has always been to offer the more esoteric selection rather than the safe supermarket bottle, with a good number of choices available by the glass as well as by the bottle.

Where is the list printed?

Traditionally on a label wrapped around an empty wine bottle, with the beer list done the same way on an empty beer bottle. Guests have been charmed by this for decades. It also means the list can change as often as the food does.

Can someone help me choose?

Please ask. The floor staff taste the menu, know the list, and will match a bottle or a glass to what you have ordered. Several of them have been doing it here for over a decade.

Do you have beer as well?

Yes — a range of domestic and imported beer, and guests regularly comment that both wine by the glass and beer are reasonably priced for the quality of the food.

Do you do wine tastings?

We host them in The Room, our private dining space. Call (850) 999-1372 to talk about putting one together.

Ask the floor what to drink

They taste the menu every day and they will tell you the truth.
