What lunch is like here

Lunch at Kool Beanz is not a scaled-down version of dinner. It is the same kitchen, the same day’s produce and the same cooks, plated a little lighter and priced accordingly. That is why the room fills at noon with a mixture of Capitol staff, lawyers, hospital people, professors and retirees who have been coming in since the nineties.

Service moves. If you say you have a 1:15 meeting, your server will get you out for it. If you have the afternoon free, order a starter for the table and take your time.

How the lunch menu is built

Two sections. Greens ‘n stuff is the salad list — never dutiful, usually with something fried or cured in it. Plates is everything else: fish, meat, pasta and a reliable vegetarian option or three. Most people order one plate. A hungry table orders a couple of salads to share first.

This is an example menu, not today’s menu. Kool Beanz writes a new menu every day around what arrives fresh that morning, so nothing here is guaranteed to be on tonight. Lunch questions

How long does lunch take?

Comfortably inside an hour if you tell your server you are on a clock. Plenty of state workers and Midtown offices use us as a working lunch spot and get back on time.

Do I need a booking for lunch?

Usually not. Lunch is first-come, first-served and turns over quickly. Between about 12:00 and 1:00 on a weekday there can be a short wait; arrive at 11:15 or after 1:15 and you will normally walk straight in.

Can I get a half-size salad?

On some archived menus the salads were offered in half sizes. Ask — the kitchen is accommodating about portioning.

Is lunch served on Saturday?

No. Lunch runs Monday to Friday. Saturday is dinner only, from 5:30.
